Discrimination between active and latent Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is a global bacterial infectious disease that is caused by various species of Mycobacteria (especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis). TB is ranging among the Top10 causes of death worldwide and, according to estimations of the World Health Organization, there are currently 2-3 billion people infected.
The majority of these infections are latent and most affected individuals will never show symptoms of active TB disease during their lifetime. However, each latent TB case has a 5-15% probability to develop active TB disease, with the risk being highly increased among immunosuppressed people. Thus, latent TB infection represents a very large reservoir of potentially-contagious active TB cases, especially in the context of immunosuppressive conditions, such as HIV infection, immunosuppressive medication during transplantation, treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease.
Based on the Reverse T Cell Technology (RTT) Lophius is developing a diagnostic TB test, which can confirm TB infection and additionally discriminate active disease from latent TB infection.
